July 2009
Volume 1 ,
Issue 1
A lot has happened since our last newsletter.
As you know we are registered with the Australian Taxation Office as a charity for tax deductibility and now, we have applied to the Attorney Generals Office for Charity Status to enable us to do more fundraising activities.
We also have a project application being submitted to Global Development Group to build a two-room library/study/computer room at the Dominican Orphanage in Dili to assist with the children’s education. We are still short of funds, by approx $11,000, and hope that we will have raised these funds by Christmas so that we can give them the go ahead to start building. This will be a Christmas present to remember from all the sponsors and those helping to raise funds including St Mary’s Catholic Church at Coomera.
St Mary’s Church is also raising some monies to help the Soibada Orphanage by way of collections and that will help us to meet the request by the Sister in Charge, Sister Lourdes, for two computers to be supplied to the orphanage in Soibada. Possibly a lap top with long lasting batteries as they only have electricity from 10pm and that only goes for about 2 hours (we have to think a bit more about this request to find the best way to support them).
These are the two special projects we have for the next 12 months. If anyone can help us to finalise these projects sooner we would greatly appreciate any help.
We have some good news and some sad news. The sad news is that one of our Trustees Dr Stephen Shepherd has left us, for personal reasons, but he is still in touch and we are keeping him informed of our progress.
The good news is that we have welcomed Cath Manning as a new Trustee. Cath is the Campus Minister at Assisi College in Coomera and she has a lot of enthusiasm in helping the children of East Timor and she has visited both the Dominican Orphanages in Dili and Soibada. She is also involved with St Mary’s Catholic Church in Coomera. We are looking forward to working with Cath to help the children of East Timor.
